Predator Free Bay of Plenty is aiming to get one rat trap in every 5th backyard, and so we currently distribute free rat trapping tunnels in Tauranga City, Western Bay of Plenty and Rotorua District Council areas. Below is some information on how to get a trap as well as getting them all set up.
Get your free trap…
We have volunteers all over the Western Bay of Plenty and Tauranga area for you to pick up a trap from. There are also some collection points coming to Rotorua soon. We are funded to distribute one free rat trap per property, regardless of section size.
Set up your trap…
The trap box is designed to keep larger animals and small fingers safe and also to make sure the trap works as humanely as possible. We recommend you keep your trap inside the box and keep it set with fresh bait at all times.
How to Set the Trap:
Although peanut butter is still one of the most common lures to use on traps, research suggests that rats like something a bit sweeter - think milk chocolate. Equally if you know rats have been eating something in particular around your property, that makes a great lure - cat, dog or chicken food. Try a different lure if one isn’t working for you.
Rats and mice don’t like to run across open areas like lawns. They prefer to use plants and buildings as cover. So, the best place for your trap is beside a wall or fence. They like to be able to see through the tunnel so make sure it runs parallel to the wall.
When you catch a mouse or rat, bury it in the garden or dispose of it in your household rubbish. Then remember to log your kills here.
